Japanese Maple
Oregon, USA

“Standing beneath the canopy of this Japanese maple, I was in awe as the late afternoon light backlit the delicate leaves. Every branch told its own story, and I felt this special tree had so much to tell. As the sun sank toward the horizon, the tree came to life with an incredible display of color, shape, and texture—the rays burst into a star within the tree.”

Anna’s Hummingbird
Los Gatos, California, USA

Nikon D3; 200-400mm VR lens; 1/250 sec at ƒ/10; ISO 800; SB 800; Gitzo 1548 CF tripod; Wimberley head.
“Keen observation of the behavior of hummingbirds is key to making successful pictures. After numerous attempts over many months, I learned to anticipate the tiny birds’ movements to be able to portray them in motion. I added fill flash to capture this water splash backlit by the sun.”

These are Bengal tigers. I studied their habit for months, until I was able to take this photo at Maharajbagh, Nagpur, India, which houses these tigresses in a large enclosure. In this picture I like the revealing claws and shining water droplets.

Fire in the sky! This is an image sequence containing 70 lightning shots, taken on Ikaría island, Greece, during a severe thunderstorm that took place June 16, 2011. In order to make the sequence, I set the camera to a tripod taking 20-second shots. After 83 minutes I ended up with this wall of lightning!

Tajikistan: With half of its territory is more than 3000 meters above sea level, this Central Asian state without access to the sea remains isolated. But it opens and shows a grandiose nature.
