Philippines floods: Mindanao struggles with aftermath

Cebu City sends volunteer doctors, forensic medical examiners to Mindanao

CEBU CITY, Philippines – The Cebu City Government is ready to send its mobile morgues to Mindanao to assist in managing the remains of the victims recovered after the flash flood in Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan. Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said he will send the mobile morgue to Mindanao after learning from government officials of Cagayan and Iligan that the major problem of the said areas now is how to deal with the dead…….(continued in link).

Mindanao has a population of Muslim 32% of Islamic people whose culture and values are mostly dictated by a small militant extremist/separatist movement called the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MLF). 63% of people in Mindanao are Christian and 5% of people are affiliated with other religious groups. Fighting between MLF and the Philippine forces has caused wide spread poverty and to date has displaced over 100,000 people from their homelands.

Historically the original inhabitants of Mindanao are the Maguindanao – a term used to describe a number of Pilipino ethnic groups. In the 13th century A.D Islam spread throughout Mindanao by Arab Traders routes between Malaysia and Indonesia. Spaniards also came to Mindanao during the 16th and 17th centuries.

Present day Mindanao is made up of various cultural groups; Muslim or Moro, the name given by the Spaniards as this particular Islamic ethnic group came from the Spanish Moors region. Marano which is another Islamic ethnic group,Tausug or Suluk an ethnic group from Malaysia, the Banguin gui part of the Moro ethnic group plus a number of indigenous tribes known as the Lumad. The Lumad is a term used to describe the indigenous people of the Southern Philippines’. The term is short for Katawhang Lumad which was made an official autonomous term in 1986 by the delegates of the Lumad Mindanaw Peoples Federation (LMPI).

Mindanao is surrounded by four seas, the Sulu sea on the west, the Philippine sea to the east, Celebes sea to the south and the Mindanao sea in the north. Mindanao’s geographic structure is made up of high volcanic mountains, large plateaus and swampy plains. The language Cebuano is mostly spoken. This language is spoken by approximately 20mil. people living within the Philippines’. The language is not spoken in the western regions or amongst the hill tribes.
