A 15 year old Afghan bride was left starving in a basement by her new husband and his family. The girl was tortured after she refused to be forced into prostitution. Sahar Gul have had her nails and clumps of hair pulled out, she had chunks of flesh cut out with pliers. She was married to a 30 year old man around seven months ago, when she was just 14 years old. Her parents contacted police after not being able to see her for several months. The case came to light last month when police rescued the teenager. Some family members have been arrested, her husband is already fled.
“This is incredibly serious and not acceptable and all those responsible will be brought in to make an example to others” said Bilal Sarwary, the interior ministry spokesman.
In november an Afghan family who refused to give their daughter in marriage to a man they considered irresponsible were attacked at home by unknown gunmen who beat the father and then poured acid over both parents and three children. The 18 year old girl, the oldest daughter, had been pursued by a local gunmen who the family considered a troublemaker and bully. With her parents support, she turned him down and instead got engaged to a relative. Acid is used intermittently as a weapon in Afghanistan, but not always against women. In the conservative, and Taliban influenced south and east, it has been thrown at girls attending schools.
Under Afghan law, the earliest age of marriage for girls is 16. However, almost half of Afghan women are married when they are younger. Human rights activists say that the plight of many women there, especially in rural areas. Registered cases of violence against women a total last year of 2,700 (Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission).
